Head out on a day trip into Iceland’s treasure chest of the Southwest, known as the Golden Circle!
As the name indicates, the Golden Circle is home to a multitude of natural gems that make for some breathtaking sights. Explore national parks, stand between two tectonic plates, witness nature at work as tons of water cascades over cliff faces and visit sites of active geothermal activity.
The Golden Circle Tour picks guests up from their hotel in Reykjavík. The highlights of the trip include:
– Gullfoss Waterfall
Gullfoss Waterfall, or Golden Falls, is arguably the most striking fall in Iceland. Marvel at the sheer size of the fall which is located along the river Hvítá, stemming from the Langjökull glacier in the highlands.
– Geysir and Strokkur
The Great Geysir and Stokkur are the two famous geysers located in an area of geothermal activity in Iceland’s southwest. A combination of water and steam erupts high into the air, with Strokkur Geyser putting on a show every ~8 minutes. The geysers operate as a result of surface water percolating down into the earth and being heated. As the water is heated, the pressure build-up eventually forces the water up to the surface where it bursts out in the form of a geyser.
– Þingvellir National Park
Walk between two tectonic plates in one of Iceland’s most prestigious National Parks. To one side, see the North American plate. To the other, see the Eurasian tectonic plate. Not only is the site an area of geological significance, it is also an important cultural hub and is a UNESCO world heritage area.
